Most filter jugs improve taste and reduce selected contaminants. They do not all remove the same things.

Standard activated-carbon and ion-exchange cartridges are mainly useful for chlorine taste, odour, some metals, and hardness/limescale. Premium filters may target lead, PFAS, microplastics, dissolved solids, or biological contaminants, but you need to check the exact filter claim.
